Every day we see the news, what tells environment pressure is higher and higher. Temperature is worldwide increasing, which cause many times environmental disasters. In many cases, the world leaders like the members of G20 trying to solve these problems with regulation of CO2 consumption.
Like in the healthcare, you have to find the cause of the problems, not the symptom treatment.
Over the years earth population growth in exponential pace and a recent study shows the population of the Earth will grow 34% compared today. In 2050, we will reach 9.1 billion in population.
To be able to feed this amount of people, we have two directions:
We continue our path on the way conquering forests to agricultural land, which we use for producing plants.
Or we radically enhance our agriculture.
The first solution is easy: we don't need to enhance our mindset, we can use the same legacy tools like in the past hundreds of years.
The second solution is more complicated than following the past. We need to find disruptive solutions or adapt the existing ones. Like the ones, I have written in my previous article. The aquaponics is a fantastic technology, but not a new one. It used by the Aztecs and Mayan Indians. We just made a technology shift which available on our current technology evolution. There are other technologies which don't exist before like graphene, which can be used to remove salt from seawater. We need to identify which technologies fit our home environment, and put them together. It has the same analogy as the Blockchain. All components exist before, but the brilliant idea to put them together.
With the technology given new possibilities, we can make more and more efficient solutions, which create less environmental pressure.
For the proper view, we need to see things in more complexity. Five years ago, when first I discussed my theory with an agriculture businessman, I get the advice, no business case which fit this solution. Now with Industry 4.0, I think we have a different situation. With industrial robotization, robots will replace most of the workforce. If we combine this with vertical farms, we can harvest plans with less land need. Why is this important? With land minimalization, we can eliminate transportation needs, which decrease environmental emission. With minimal transportation needs, we can replace fossil-based transportation with an electric one. And never the less the produced food will arrive at the stores fresher. With proper planning, and advanced analytics we can minimize the time in which the product, with travel from the farm to the customer. Imagine IoT combination with a future farm. The customer (or even the fridge) order the food, which at the ordered moment cut from the plant, and immediately send by a robotized delivery (like a drone). With the minimal distance what the future farm has from the customer, we can efficiently use devices like the drones.
Why these all important? We can move agricultural lands to the cities. If we do not use them anymore, we can give back to the nature.
To catalyst these directions of development, governments have significant responsibility. They need to support these conversions, with support programs. I can imagine a program, where they support migration from land to vertical farms in the city, and in the end, the property of the area goes back to the country, which deploys trees and wild forest. This direction will also decrease the use of chemicals which help the environment to recover.
China already started the forest restoration, which is a smart decision!

But if we combine this with the solution described above?
I hope this post will find some government which opens for radical changes, because in the future. I think this is the only way which makes a sustainable shift against the climate change.
